Dog Boarding

The Gull Lake Boarding Kennel offers 3 different sized runs to accomodate your dogs. Dogs are kenneled separately (unless they come in together and the owner would like them kept together) and play separately. Each dog gets to run outside in our large backyard area four times daily and once between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm. Unless specified, we do not restrict walk time to "leash time." Playtime is additional time outside in our play area (more information below).

What is required for my dog to stay at your kennel?

The following is required to board at our facility and we recommend that all vaccinations be updated seven to ten days prior to boarding:

  • Rabies
  • DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo, Parainfluenza)
  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
  • Fecal examination

If your dog has not been vaccinated at our hospital, we will need you to bring in proof of vaccinations from your veterinarian at the time of boarding or have a certificate faxed to 269-629-0848 in advance.  (Be sure to have your veterinarian send the fax as "ATTN: Kennel Manager")

If your dog is not up-to-date and you don't have time to get him or her into your regular veterinarian, we will be happy to give any overdue vaccinations at the time of boarding.

Frequent boarders (boarding more often than twice each year) are recommended to maintain a vaccination schedule of every 6 months for the Bordetell vaccine (Kennel Cough).

Dogs are required to be at least 6 months of age and fully house trained.

What is the cost of boarding my dog with you and what does the price include?

The cost of boarding is as follows:

  • 1 dog: $19/night
  • 2 dogs/1 run: $34/night
  • 2 dogs/2 runs: $38/night
  • 3 dogs/1 run: $45/night for all dogs

These prices include food (Royal Canin, Digestive Low Fat), blankets, mats, and bowls. It also includes four walks a day and one walk at night after 8 PM in our large backyard. If your dog is a picky eater or on a special diet, you are welcome to bring your own food.

Check out our new playtime schedule!

Playtime is offered up to twice a day for your dog(s). During playtime your dog(s) will enjoy 15 minutes in our 2,852 square foot play area located in the back yard.  This time is spent one-on-one with a kennel attendant and allows your dog to run around in the yard, play on the doggie ramp or do anything else they find enjoyable.

C.E.T Sundays

Give your pet something special to chew on. Playtime on Sunday’s will include your dog receiving a C.E.T. dental chew.  These chews are healthy for your dog and help to clean their teeth as well as freshen their breath.

Extra Minute Mondays

On Mondays your dog will enjoy not 15 minutes outside, but 20. This allows your dog five more minutes to enjoy sniffing around the yard, playing catch or time to just enjoy the sunshine.

Catch The Ball Tuesdays

On Tuesdays your dog will enjoy playing catch as well as fetch during their 15 minutes of playtime.

Wild Wednesdays

Wednesday’s activity is great for high-energy dogs! Wild Wednesdays are conducted by filling a bucket full of bouncing balls and dropping them all at once. This allows your dog to run in multiple directions and release large amounts of energy.

Peanut Butter Treat Thursdays

After coming in from 15 minutes of play your dog will enjoy a nice Kong filled with peanut butter. Kongs are a tough rubber toys that are filled with treats and keep dogs busy for long periods of time while they try to remove what is put inside.

Frisbee Fridays

Playtime on Fridays will give your dog the chance to release energy while chasing after a Frisbee (plastic or cloth Frisbees are available).

Seasonal Saturdays

As the seasons change so do our Saturday games.

àWinter: Snow Ball Toss – Dogs love to chase after snowballs, especially when they disappear into a snow bank. This game allows dogs to enjoy searching for and running after snowballs.

àSpring:  Tennis Ball Catch – In the springtime your dog will love playing catch with tennis balls.

àSummer:  Pool Ring Toss – During the hot summer months your dog will want to cool off during playtime. The pool ring toss consists of rubber rings being tossed into a small swimming pool. The dogs will be able to retrieve the rings from outside of the pool or get in to cool off.

àFall:  Football Toss – On Saturdays in the fall your dog will enjoy chasing after the football.

$5.00 - 15 minutes One On One Playtime
$2.00/additional dog - 15 minutes One On One Playtime

Payment is due in full when you drop off or pick up your pet.

Check out dogs that have had a blast running through the tunnel, over the ramp and around the yard. Note: Only dogs that come in together play together.

How far in advance do I need to book a reservation for my dog?

During the majority of the year, you should plan on reserving room for your dog at least 1-2 weeks in advance to be sure we have a run available.

Please keep in mind that summer, spring break, Labor Day Weekend, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's are our busiest times. People usually begin booking these reservations 4-6 months in advance, and we are usually full as early as 3 months before the actual date.  Plan on scheduling as soon as you know your travel plans.

What is your cancellation policy?

The kennel asks that clients give 36 hours notice when cancelling their boarding reservation.  This is to help us provide the best care to all of our clients and their pets.

If a client cancels their reservation less than 36 hours before their reservation a $25.00 charge will be added to the bill.

No call/no shows for dog boarding reservation will be billed $19.00 per night reserved.

Why does my dog have to be at least 6 months old?
Dogs who are less than 6 months old can have a hard time being boarded. It can be stressful for young puppies to be in a new situation and can also cause them to "forget" a lot of the house training you worked on so hard with them! Puppies who have frequent accidents in their runs are charged an extra cleaning fee.

My dog has to have medicine daily. Can this be taken care of while (s)he boards?

One of the benefits of boarding your dog at a kennel attached to an animal hospital is that all our employees are trained to take the best care of your pets and there is always a doctor available should your dog encounter any problems.

We do have a fridge in the kennel, so dogs who are on insulin or other medications that require refrigeration will not have any problems. Also, if your dog takes pills and likes them in a particular treat (a particular favorite is cheese or hot dog pieces!), bring it along for us to give to them just as you do at home. Otherwise, most pills are given with peanut butter and a treat.

I've never boarded my dog before. Is there anything I should worry about?

Just like people, dogs all react differently to new situations. Some dogs love being in the kennel; it's like a vacation for them. And others are nervous about the new surroundings or new people, or the other dogs around them. Most dogs lose their initial nervousness after the first 24 hours or so.

The most common problems we encounter in dogs who are nervous about boarding are:

  • Diarrhea - This is common in dogs who are nervous or stressed and is easily treated with a short course of medicine if necessary. It is not a condition that is harmful to your dog. There is an additional charge for the medicine.
  • Loss of Appetite - Occasionally, some dogs may eat less while they are with us out of nervousness. Usually after the first or second day, their appetite returns to normal, but if it does not we will entice them with Iams Savory Sauce mixed into their food at no extra cost.

Should I bring my dog's regular food?

We provide Royal Canin, Digestive Low Fat adult dog food for the majority of dogs staying with us in the kennel.

However, dogs who have food allergies, special diets, known as "picky" eaters, and dogs with sensitive stomachs should have their own food brought from home.  Dogs with sensitive stomachs may get loose stools from an abrupt diet change and will benefit from continuing on their own food.

We do not regularly provide canned food; if your dog eats canned food, you should bring that with you at the time of boarding. Gull Lake Animal Hospital does sell a wide variety of canned and dry food for dogs and cats.

Please let us know when you drop off your dog if (s)he has special dietary needs, food allergies, or other food-related problems so we can take the best possible care of your pet and avoid any situations while in our care.

Please also let us know if it is okay for your dog to receive treats (Iams Adult Biscuits) while staying with us.
